Knoxville’s Saint Patrick’s Day Parade took to the streets on Saturday and the city turned green in every direction. Several groups turned out decent floats while some of the members of the crowd made for the best photos. As always, I love the happy kids all decked out for fun.

The Saint Patrick’s Day Parade is maybe the closest to just about right that we have in the city. It isn’t too long, but it’s long enough. It features its own color scheme and it owns the bagpipes. Dancers dance like no others doing their little jigs. It’s got a little bit of religion, but served up with a bit of beer. I mean, who else has leprechauns, for goodness sake? And they hang out with Saint Patrick, himself.

It also doesn’t overdo the vintage cars, sports cars, and every other kind of vehicle. Sure, we got Jeeps for Jesus (what does that even mean?), but there were only three or four of them. I could do without the vehicles simply emblazoned with the names of various companies across the city—come on guys, give us a little creativity with your logo!

The Democrats showed up, as they do for every parade, and elicited a few boos from the crowd. This time the Republicans showed up, which seems about time. The Republican Women were followed by the local Republican Chair.

The Knights of Columbus easily won “Best Dressed” if you’re going by style and not just fun. People lined the streets, hung out of windows and generally made a good day of it downtown making their various sartorial statements in dazzling green.

For me, it all ended rather nicely, looking down at the assembled bagpipe players outside Clancy’s as they blew on into the afternoon.
