We have established before that I am not a beer drinker. I have a great appreciation for the craft but not so much for the flavor. (Although the PB&J Mixed Tape from Xul was a surprising and delightful find!) So, in my search for casual places to relax and have a drink, a classic brewery is not the highest on my list unless they offer more than beer. It’s a real bonus when the food is good, and the atmosphere is welcoming and inviting for my kids. Barrelhouse is that place for me. A plethora of drinks, both non-alcoholic and alcohol, and a food menu that flies under the radar but is some of the tastiest and most affordable options in town (Check out their $8 lunch special!), add in games and a comfortable space to hang out, and it is an excellent choice for any day.
At the heart of Gypsy Circus Cider Company are its founders, Aaron and Stephanie Carson. Their journey began with a shared passion for crafting high-quality, innovative ciders that would appeal to a diverse audience. With backgrounds in business and a love for adventure, Aaron and Stephanie set out to create a unique space that would not only produce top-notch ciders but also foster a sense of community and creativity.
With growing success in their Kingsport location as Tennessee’s first craft cidery that opened in 2016, Knoxville seemed like the next logical spot with its growing craft beer scene and expanding downtown footprint. Opening in October 2020, Barrelhouse by Gypsy Circus has made a name for itself with its eclectic appeal, creative drinks and outside-the-box events. Since opening in Knoxville, they have expanded to Oak Ridge, with a mini golf course at that location location, aptly named “The Greens.” They have a sister company, Atomic City Beer, which brews their beer and is served at all locations.
Barrelhouse by Gypsy Circus is more than just a cidery; it is a hub where people from all walks of life come together to enjoy great drinks, good company, and a lively atmosphere. They were one of Knoxville’s first Safe Bars, educating servers and bartenders on the signs of human trafficking and abuse.
Aaron and Stephanie are self-proclaimed “board game nerds.” This spirit brings fun and whimsy to the space with yard games, board games, trivia, Singo nights and other community events and partnerships. The next event is on Feb 2 for Groundhog Day. They are part of the Punxsutawney Phil Groundhog Club and will host a viewing party to find out if he sees his shadow this year. (He better not. I am over winter and ready for springtime.). After that, there will be a Puppy Bowl on Superbowl Sunday, where customers can come out and play with puppies in training to become service dogs. There will be lots of vendors
They have recurring events with the Knoxville Run Club, as well as comedy nights, brunch, open mic nights and trivia. They also host a cider festival and a cheese festival, and you better bet I’m going to be at that cheese festival this year!
Its rustic Bohemian design characterizes the space, featuring wooden barrels, cozy seating areas, and an inviting outdoor patio. The walls are adorned with vibrant artwork, reflecting the community’s creative spirit. Many of the walls and bars are made with decommissioned aging barrels.
The highlight of Barrelhouse is its diverse menu of ciders and meads. The ciders are crafted using traditional methods combined with innovative techniques, resulting in a range of familiar and surprising flavors. In addition to ciders, Barrelhouse also offers a selection of cocktails, craft beers and non-alcoholic beverages, ensuring that everyone can find something to enjoy. They have also released a line of cream liqueurs that make a great cocktail or coffee add-in. You can join the Mug Club for perks and your own pottery mug to sip from every visit.
TAPestry: The Event Space
Located within the Barrelhouse is TAPestry, an event space designed to host a variety of gatherings, from intimate celebrations to events for up to 150 guests (standing, around 50 seated). TAPestry is a versatile venue that can be customized to fit the needs of any occasion. They have hosted baby showers, weddings, workshops, yoga, corporate events, concerts and even bar mitzvahs. The price point is designed to be affordable and has options to include tables for standing or sitting, basic linen, catering from their in-house restaurant and cider and beer packages.
You can also bring in outside catering, a DJ and other options to customize the space for your event. I was impressed by the versatility of the space. Since opening, they have added a barrel wall that adds to the rustic character to the room and serves as a space to age their cider. The day I visited, they were setting up for a wedding. For larger events at the taphouse, they can open the garage door separating the space to expand the footprint.
Whether you are a cider enthusiast, an art lover, or simply looking for a unique place to unwind, Barrelhouse by Gypsy Circus offers an experience that captures the essence of Knoxville’s vibrant spirit.
