Chicago

I saw this one years ago when I was experiencing my first Broadway shows and it did not disappoint. I am excited to revisit it.

“CHICAGO is still the one musical with everything that makes Broadway shimmy-shake: a universal tale of fame, fortune, and all that jazz, with one showstopping song after another and the most astonishing dancing you’ve ever seen.

In the whirlwind of Chicago’s Jazz Age, two of the Cook County Jail’s most notorious murderesses—vaudeville star Velma Kelly and chorus girl Roxie Hart—become fierce rivals as they compete for headlines amidst a media frenzy.

Broadway’s longest-running musical has been razzle dazzling audiences for 27 years, and after more than 10,000 performances, 6 Tony Awards®, 2 Olivier Awards, and a Grammy®, we’re just getting started.”

Back to the Future: The Musical

Having just seen this brand new show in NYC this spring break, I can tell you it is one our whole family loved. It was funny, fast, and the talent was incredible! Even my kids who had not seen the original movie had a blast at this one!

“Great Scott! Back to the Future, the beloved, cinematic classic is now a Broadway musical with its destination set for Knoxville in 2025!

Winner of the 2022 Olivier Award for Best New Musical, four WhatsOnStage Awards, including Best New Musical, and the Broadway World Award for Best New Musical, Back to the Future: The Musical is adapted for the stage by the iconic film’s creators Bob Gale (Back to the Future trilogy) and Robert Zemeckis (Forrest Gump) and directed by the Tony Award®-winner John Rando with original music by multi-Grammy® winners Alan Silvestri (Avengers: Endgame) and Glen Ballard (Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror”), alongside hit songs from the movie including “The Power of Love,” “Johnny B. Goode,” “Earth Angel,” and “Back in Time.”

When Marty McFly finds himself transported back to 1955 in a time machine built by the eccentric scientist Doc Brown, he accidentally changes the course of history. Now he’s in a race against time to fix the present, escape the past, and send himself… back to the future. When Back to the Future hits 88mph, it’ll change musical theatre history forever.”

Les Misérables: On sale Monday, December 16
Performances: July 29-Aug 3, 2025

LES MISÉRABLES

Is there a show more representative of arts, culture and theatre than Les Misérables? The score is incredible and powerful, and the story is moving.

“Cameron Mackintosh presents the acclaimed production of Alain Boublil and Claude-Michel Schönberg’s Tony Award-winning musical phenomenon, Les Misérables.

This brilliant staging has taken the world by storm and has been hailed as “Les Mis for the 21st Century” (Huffington Post), “a reborn dream of a production” (Daily Telegraph) and “one of the greatest musicals ever created” (Chicago Tribune).

Set against the backdrop of 19th century France, Les Misérables tells an enthralling story of broken dreams and unrequited love, passion, sacrifice and redemption – a timeless testament to the survival of the human spirit. This epic and uplifting story has become one of the most celebrated musicals in theatrical history.

The magnificent score of Les Misérables includes the songs “I Dreamed a Dream,” “On My Own,” “Bring Him Home,” “One Day More,” “Master of the House” and many more.  Seen by over 130 million people worldwide in 53 countries, 438 cities and 22 languages, Les Misérables is undisputedly one of the world’s most popular musicals.”\

Clarence Brown Theatre 2023 – 2024 Season:

Not to be outdone, Clarence Brown Theatre (CBT) has a great lineup of local talent and performances. You can see the subscription and ticketing options HERE.

  • KNOXVILLE
    Performances: Sept 4-22, 2024

“Based on James Agee’s autobiographical, Pulitzer Prize-winning masterpiece ‘A Death in the Family’, this moving and innovative new musical reunites the dynamic Tony Award®-winning creative team behind ‘Ragtime’. The story begins as an adult Agee struggles to write his greatest work about the event that touched his young life and the effect it had on his family and his future. An evocative depiction of loss and grief and the forces that shape who we are, ‘Knoxville’ is a universal coming-of-age story about family, faith, and love—and about the boy who will grow up to write it. With a sweeping musical score and brilliant cast, this is a must-see event.”
  • CRY IT OUT
    Performances: Sept 18-Oct 5, 2024

“Acclaimed writer Molly Smith Metzler (‘Shameless’, ‘Orange is the New Black’, and ‘Maid’) brings us a new comedy about the challenges of parenthood. This heart-warming comedy finds divergent young mothers strike up a friendship during precious nap time. The comedy takes a sharp and honest look at the power of female friendship, the paradox of working motherhood, and the effects that economic and social class has on parenthood in America. ‘Cry it Out’ captures the audience with laughs, a little rage and the bonds of early parenthood.”
  • HOW TO DEFEND YOURSELF
    Performances: Oct 23-Nov 10, 2024
“College students come together for a DIY self-defense workshop after a sorority sister is assaulted. A sharp, witty, funny, and ferocious play that explores how “not to be a victim,” and how to use your body as a weapon. The classes become a channel for rage, trauma, confusion, anxiety and desire. The play explores the way sexual assault steals your sense of belonging and how these women might get that back.”
  • A CHRISTMAS CAROL
    Performances: Nov 21-Dec 21, 2024

“Knoxville’s Most Beloved Family Tradition! For more than three decades, Knoxvillians have returned year-after-year to experience this timeless story of hope and redemption. You’ll create a wonderful memory… and you will leave the theater with a warm heart and renewed spirit!”

  • INHERIT THE WIND
    Performances: Feb12-March 2, 2025
“Feel the heat of the courtroom in the sizzling American classic ‘Inherit the Wind’, an explosive drama inspired by the most important trial of the 20th Century, the Scopes Monkey Trial, on its 100th anniversary. As a media circus descends on a small Tennessee town, two of the nation’s most powerful lawyers go head-to-head in the ultimate battle of wits, wills, and the political and religious divide that could be ripped directly from today’s headlines. In a fresh production boldly reimagined for today, the fast-paced drama explores religion, intellectual freedom and the relationship between social norms and law.”
  • FAILURE: A LOVE STORY
    Performances: March 12-April 6, 2025
  • THE PLAY THAT GOES WRONG
    Performances: April 16-May 4, 2025
“Welcome to the opening night of ‘The Murder at Haversham Manor’, where things go from not very good to an utter disaster. ‘The Play That Goes Wrong’ is an ill-fated play-within-a-play, set on the opening night of the Cornley Drama Society’s newest production. The troupe’s ambitious whodunit has everything you never want in a show: falling props, collapsing scenery, an unconscious leading lady, a corpse that can’t play dead, and actors who trip over everything…including their lines. Come see why this show has been called “the funniest play Broadway has ever seen!” (Huffington Post)”
