I dropped in on Kern’s Food Hall over the weekend to see what is new. At the time of the Grand Opening, just about six weeks ago, a promise was made that new businesses and activities would be added over the coming months. Also, at the time I took photographs for that article, Archer Paper Goods had not opened its doors, though I think that came later in the weekend.
This trip I was able to nose around inside looking at the stationary sets, books, and lots more. It’s quite a large, colorful store and I’ll have to take another trip to look at the range of products in detail. Certainly, if you or someone you know loves all things paper, this is a good spot to explore.
I also caught the Vols Nail Spa in action this time around. The spot wasn’t packed, but it was busy. They do nails, of course, and they don’t have to be that particular shade of orange associated with a local university, though if that’s what you want, they have you covered. They also offer facial waxing and threading, eyelash extensions, pedicures, manicures, and foot massage.
Nearby, and running throughout a large portion of the hall, vintage wear from a range of vendors was on display and for sale. It’s just one of the kinds of programming that has started inside and outside the hall. You can find an ongoing list of events here. They are featuring, karaoke nights, happy hours, yoga on the lawn, trivia, and live music lots of nights.
I also noticed a couple of new food spots, which is something that I’ve heard people want more of at the hall. While several promised restaurants or stalls haven’t yet opened, I spotted Won Kitchen, a Korean rice bowl restaurant, which is new to me. Customers choose their base, protein, toppings, and sauces, building their own bowl t0-order. It offers another main food item, which has been in relative short supply for a food hall. More are coming and are listed on the webpage.
Already providing a lot of sweets and desserts, another option is now available with the opening of Irvey’s Ice Cream Company. You might guess that they have ice cream, but they also have Italian Ice, slushies, milk shakes, and floats. If you are feeling adventurous and don’t have to drive home, they offer something a bit more unusual: boozy infusions.
This is far from the end of the new spots that will open in the food hall. More retail is coming and lots more food, including a taqueria, an all-day breakfast restaurant, burgers, barbeque, and authentic Cuban food. I’ll try to check in again soon and see what’s up.
