If you read my profile of Danny Perez a few weeks ago as part of the article about Contra Vintage Shop coming to downtown, you know that he has a habit of exceeding expectations. He’s done it again, as the shop he’d hoped to have open by the end of May opened this past Saturday at 135 South Central Street. And he’s filled it up with tons of great vintage toys, clothing, shoes, and more.
The shop replaces Honeymouth Leather Goods at the location and continues a trend of increased spots for retail in the Old City, including RALA, Bethie Lou’s, Boldure, Dr. Jane’s Health and Wellness and more. Just up the hill on the 100 block, Addison’s Used and Antique Books, Paris Woodhull Illustrations, Daché, and Jack’s have given retail a good foothold there, making this part of town more of a place to shop and browse from store-to-store more so than it has been in a long time.
Danny brings a shot of young energy to the block with a lot of street-wear, vintage UT wear, toys and other children’s items many people might remember from their childhood. All the icons are represented, from Michael Jordan to Dale Earnhardt, Jr., from Waldo (Where is he? He’s here!) to Mickey Mouse. The store has a mix of accessible pop culture and hard-to-find rarities.
Danny also offers branded merchandize with the cool Contra Logo, likely to start popping up around town as the store gains the fans that seem certain to flock there. Stop in and meet the personable, hard working young guy that is bringing a fresh vibe to the city. He will be open every day but Monday, Noon – 7:00 pm, though he said he may do some late-nights Thursdays through Saturdays when the Old City crowds are large.
