I have written a lot of words in the last three-plus years, but these are likely my most difficult to date. My affinity for food, restaurants and seeing the process from the ground up has taken me to many wonderful places and allowed me to meet so many incredible people in Knoxville. One of those people was Chad Kennedy, founder of Kennedy Concepts, Inc.

Locally, Kennedy Concepts, Inc. owns Café 4 on Market Square, Loco Burro in West Town Mall, The Kennedy on Gay Street, and Mimosas, opened in November just across the Henley Bridge. Last month, they announced two additional concepts for Gay Street: MōkuMōku at 412 S. Gay St. (the former Babalu space), and the yet-to-be-named American-style steakhouse at 419 S. Gay St. (the former Frothy Monkey space). In Gatlinburg, Kennedy Concepts, Inc. owns and manages Myron Mixon’s BBQ, Loco Burro Gatlinburg, Johnny Rockets, and Puckers Sports Grill.

Today, the company announced Chad’s passing on Dec. 28 in a press release.

“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved founder, Chad Kennedy, on Dec. 28, 2025. Chad was a visionary restaurateur whose passion for hospitality and unwavering standards, combined with his deep commitment to the Kennedy Concepts team, shaped every aspect of our restaurants. We extend our deepest condolences to his family, friends, colleagues and the many guests whose lives Chad touched.

“In honoring Chad’s legacy, we want to reassure our guests, team members and partners that all restaurants will continue to operate as usual. Our doors remain open, our kitchens remain active, and our commitment to the quality, consistency and service that define the Kennedy Concepts brand remains steadfast.

“For years, Chad Kennedy built and mentored an extraordinary team who carry forward the standards and traditions that have earned the trust of our guests. That team continues to oversee day-to-day operations across all locations, operating within established systems and guided by the core values instilled by our founder … most notably, the principle to ‘Never Give Up!’

“We remain dedicated to maintaining the highest levels of hospitality and culinary excellence, preserving our menus and signature experiences, and supporting our employees and communities with the same care and responsibility that our founder exemplified.

“Further information about memorial arrangements and ways to honor Chad Kennedy’s legacy will be shared when available. In the meantime, we invite our guests to join us in celebrating a life devoted to bringing people together around the table.”

I first met Chad and his long-time partner and Kennedy Concepts Marketing & Events Manager, Brittany Singh, as The Kennedy opened on Gay Street in 2024. I was impressed by Chad’s dedication to his staff. He believed that positivity had to come from the top down and nurtured that environment in each of his ventures.

Chad talked about learning the art of hospitality from his mother and how it became a passion for him. He worked to make each restaurant stand out from the crowd in both flavor and style.

Chad was meticulous in his endeavors. He wanted his company’s efforts and offerings to the community to be perfect every time. He created spaces where people felt
welcome and well cared for, both in the food and the ambiance. I learned a lot from watching them pull together the concepts I had the privilege of covering with them through The Kennedy and Mimosas.

As the press release indicates, his corporate team is dedicated to carrying on his legacy of making people happy through good food and spaces to gather with friends and family. Maybe you’ll even make a few new friends there, too. I know I did when I met Chad, Brittany and their team.

If you are inclined, go out and enjoy one of the restaurants Chad dedicated his career to bring to the Knoxville area. Take someone you love and share a meal in a space where you can relax over food that was thoughtfully curated for each guest. Take in the moments together. Tomorrow isn’t promised to us, but we are here today. Love your people and love them big. Celebrate each day you have.

To Chad, cheers to you and all you accomplished and all you loved. I’m raising a glass for you.
