Mighty Mud has been around for over a decade and, in that time has seen several different locations in search of the perfect space. Barron Hall has owned the business for the last ten years and has been at the current location of 127 Jennings Ave since 2017. Unable to afford the current owner’s price for the buildings, Hall searched for a new location to serve their needs better. The new location is 1528 Island Home Ave. (next to Printshop Beer and under the overpass). This spot will allow them to have all their services under one roof.

I met with Daniel Huxtable, the manager for the last two years, to get the update. Daniel is one of four staff members at Mighty Mud, and over 100 artists use the shop to create their works. Mighty Mud offers 42 artists’ studios, and in addition to serving so many artists, it has over 1,000 community members who come through its doors each year.

Services offered are firing services for those who do the work independently and only need a place to fire the item. Community classes are offered weekly at various times and skill levels. They also sell supplies and equipment to artists and schools in the area. There are occasional rental opportunities for members to lease a space to use the building for their work with access to firing and glazing. They offer 15 electric wheels, a glaze lab, 5+ indoor electric kilns, a wood-fired kiln, two slab rollers, an extruder, a documentation (photo booth) area, a spray booth, and a large outdoor area for projects.

The new location is 1528 Island Home Ave. (next to Printshop Beer and under the overpass), and the official move date is June 4th. This spot will allow them to have all their services under one roof with the same amount of space, but since it is all together, it will enable them to function more efficiently. The Island Home location is in a growing area of South Knox with easy proximity to breweries and restaurants and offers ample parking. They have been working to prepare the space for their makers over the last few months, including window installation along the front of the building to allow natural light through previously boarded-up window spaces.

Mighty Mud Studio is active in First Friday events and offers special events.  The classes include Raku, Wine & Wheel, Cup, Bowl & Plate, Mug Makers, and Experience the Wheel. Additionally, they offer Bagels and Bowls on the second Sunday morning of each month. You can also shop in their retail area and purchase from artists and makers.

On June 4th, Mighty Mud opened its doors at the new location. They invite you to come and explore the space, try your hand at pottery, and share your experiences with us. We’re excited to see what you create!
