Dangling Photographs: Knoxville Skylines and More

Here is another group of photographs of the city that I’ve had tucked away in various files. Consider it end-of-the-year blog cleaning. Most of these photographs are of the skyline and various buildings around town. I’m pretty pleased with some of them. I hope you are, too.

These first two photographs were made on a very cold night in October. Urban Woman and I braved the icy temperatures and howling winds to walk all the way to James White Fort – probably close to a mile. We got there to find a note on the door saying the walking tour had been canceled! We found a warm place to have dinner instead, but I did get two photographs out of the trip.

I’m not sure where the plaster work is located, but there’s so much little detail like that around Knoxville that we tend to simply overlook. I don’t remember a suspended star on Gay Street before and I’m always happy when I spot a Dylan quote.  How many memories between friends are made on Market Square. Of course two of these pictured, Whitney and Laith, I’m proud to call friends of mine.

I realize a few million pictures have been taken of this street over the years, but it is a pretty special street and I never get tired of shooting it. That’s about as good as I’ve done at night and I love standing in the middle of Gay Street on holidays when downtown feels deserted. Not that I’d wish that to be the case regularly, of course, we’ve  been there and done that.

The Grateful Dead Black Bean Burger is one of my favorites at Tupelo Honey. It’s worth noting that before Tupelo Honey seemed to invent the two-hour wait for a meal in downtown Knoxville, Pete’s had lines stretched down the block. This is from a game-day morning, but still. Now if they could make some good coffee to go with all that artery clogging, grease-filled goodness, I’d go stand in line.

I still get a thrill every time I see the Megabus downtown. I haven’t investigated why it’s stopping in front of the Tennessee Theatre, but I’ve seen it there more than once. This has been the year of the food truck (finally) for Knoxville. Here’s hoping the trend continues and expands. The motorcycle is just cool.

I took a walk across the Gay Street Bridge on a beautiful day in October and walked around Baptist Hospital which offered nice views of the city. It would have been better if I could have gotten onto the roof. Anybody have access?

So, now my files are cleaned out and ready to see what the new year brings. I’m sure it will be interesting, exciting and, much of it, unexpected. Hopefully, I’ll have the photographs to show you.
